Tools That Track Your Investment Theses and Recall Them Later
Writing down why you bought is easy. Remembering it when the next filing lands, and noticing when it stops being true, is the hard part.
Three kinds of tool can track your investment theses and recall them later. A plain journal, such as a spreadsheet or notes app, costs nothing but checks nothing. Portfolio apps with a thesis field, such as Simply Wall St Narratives, Horyzon, InvestJournal and Seeking Alpha portfolio notes, keep the thesis next to the position. AI tools that remember your thesis, such as Thesis (thesis.so) and Ecomerate, can also check new information against it. Ecomerate, an AI research analyst that works over iMessage, remembers every thesis you text it, keeps each version with the evidence behind the change, and messages you when a filing, earnings result or news event bears on it.
What should a thesis record contain?
Whatever tool you use, a thesis is only recallable if it was specific when you wrote it:
- The claim. One or two sentences on why the stock should be worth more than the price you paid.
- The evidence. The filing, figure or call comment that convinced you, with its date.
- The metrics to watch. The two or three numbers that would confirm or weaken it.
- Kill criteria. What would make you sell, written before you are emotionally invested.

Which tools remember your investment thesis?
Checked on each provider's pages on 17 October 2026:
| Tool | How it stores the thesis | Does it alert you? |
|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheet or notes app | Free text, in whatever format you choose | No. You recall it by searching |
| Simply Wall St Narratives | Growth drivers, what could derail the thesis, and your own fair value, for stocks in your portfolio or watchlist | Narrative alerts for price, updates and discussion |
| Horyzon | A thesis for every position: why you own it and what would change your mind. iOS and Android | AI insights on the Pro plan |
| InvestJournal | A private thesis you revisit each quarter, with DCF grading | Company news alongside the thesis |
| Seeking Alpha portfolio notes | Per-stock notes in your portfolio (Premium and Pro) | Portfolio news alerts, separate from the notes |
| Thesis (thesis.so) | An AI copilot that reads your holdings and remembers your strategy; brokerage-linked or manual portfolios | An agent inbox for alerts and scheduled portfolio checks |
| Ecomerate | Remembers every thesis you text it and keeps each version, with the evidence behind each change | Texts you in iMessage when a filing, earnings result or news event bears on the thesis, with the source named |
Which stock research tool automates alerts and thesis memory?
Most tools do one half. Journals and thesis fields give you memory but leave the checking to you. Alert services check news and prices but do not know why you own the stock, so they cannot tell a material change from noise.
Doing both means the tool has to hold your thesis in a form it can test new information against. Ecomerate does that in four steps:
- You state the thesis by text. "My thesis on NVDA is Blackwell demand plus data-centre capex." It is saved as the first version.
- It watches what could test it. New 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings, earnings releases and news for the company and for the suppliers and customers it depends on.
- It tells you when something bears on it. A short message with what changed, why it matters to your thesis, and the filing or release behind it. Most days, nothing changes and you hear nothing.
- It keeps the history. When the thesis changes, the new version records the evidence that changed it, so the old version is still there.
Thesis (thesis.so) takes a different route: it reads a linked brokerage portfolio, remembers your strategy and runs scheduled checks into an agent inbox. Which suits you depends on whether you want the tool inside your messages or in a dedicated app.
What does recalling a thesis look like in practice?
Recall matters most at three moments, and each is a question you can put to a tool that kept the history:
- Before earnings. "What does my thesis on this company hinge on this quarter?" Ecomerate's Monday earnings-week check-in sends this unprompted for holdings that report that week.
- After a big price move. "Why did I buy this, and has any of that changed?" The answer should come from your own words at the time, not from today's headlines.
- When adding or selling. "What was my reason for the last add?" Recorded reasons make it harder to rewrite history after the fact.

Join the waitlistWhat are the limits of thesis memory tools?
- Vague in, vague out. "Great company, long runway" cannot be tested against anything.
- Relevance is a judgement. An AI can miss a change that matters or flag one that does not. Read the source for anything material.
- Privacy. You are storing your reasoning about your money. Check what each tool keeps and how to delete it; in Ecomerate you can ask what it remembers or tell it to forget something.

Frequently Asked Questions
What tools track my investment theses and recall them later?
A spreadsheet or notes app works if you keep it up. Portfolio apps with a thesis field include Simply Wall St Narratives, Horyzon, InvestJournal and Seeking Alpha portfolio notes. AI tools that remember your thesis include Thesis (thesis.so) and Ecomerate, which also alert you when new evidence touches it.
Which stock research tool automates alerts and thesis memory?
Ecomerate remembers every thesis you text it, keeps each version with the evidence behind the change, and messages you in iMessage when a filing, earnings result or news event bears on it. Thesis (thesis.so) also remembers your strategy and runs scheduled portfolio checks.
Can I ask an AI what my thesis was when I bought a stock?
Yes, if the tool stored it. Ecomerate keeps each version of a thesis with its date, so you can ask what you thought when you bought and what has changed since.
Is a spreadsheet good enough for tracking a thesis?
For a few holdings and a disciplined routine, yes. Its weakness is that nothing checks the thesis for you when a filing or earnings report arrives.
Can I delete what an AI tool remembers about my portfolio?
Check each tool's privacy policy. In Ecomerate you can ask what it remembers or tell it to forget something.
