Tools That Summarise Company Filings and Highlight Thesis Changes
A 10-K summary tells you what the filing says. A thesis change tells you which part of it should change your mind.
Tools that summarise company filings fall into three groups. Comparison tools such as BamSEC, now part of AlphaSense, mark every addition and removal between two filings. AI summarisers such as Lense, Fiscal.ai, Koyfin's Compare Matrix and AlphaSense condense a filing or transcript and cite the passages they used. Neither knows why you own the stock, so neither can tell you which change matters to you. Ecomerate, an AI research analyst that works over iMessage, checks each new 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K for the companies you hold against the thesis you gave it, and texts you the change with the filing and section named.

Which filing changes affect an investment thesis?
Most of a 10-K carries over from last year almost word for word. The changes worth reading cluster in a few places:
- Risk factors (Item 1A). New risks, removed risks, and existing risks whose wording got stronger.
- Management's Discussion and Analysis (Item 7). A change in what management leads with, or new language on demand, pricing or costs.
- Segment disclosures. Growth or margins in the segment your thesis depends on.
- Customer concentration and liquidity. A larger share of revenue from one customer, or tighter covenants.
- 8-K items. Results (Item 2.02), executive departures (Item 5.02) and material agreements (Item 1.01).
A redline shows all of these and much more. A thesis-aware check shows only the ones that touch your reason for owning the stock. Our guide to tracking changes in SEC filings covers the manual method.
How do you make any summariser thesis-aware?
If you use a general AI tool, give it the thesis and ask for changes against it, not a summary:
My thesis on [COMPANY]: [TWO SENTENCES]. The metrics I watch: [METRICS]. I would sell if: [KILL CRITERIA].
Compare the attached [NEW FILING] with [PREVIOUS FILING]. List only changes that support, weaken or are irrelevant to the thesis, in that order.
For each, quote the new wording, name the section, and say whether it is a change in facts or only in wording. Say "no material change" if there is none.
This works, but you have to remember to do it for every filing of every holding, and to paste the current version of the thesis each time.
How does Ecomerate flag thesis changes in filings?
Ecomerate is an AI research analyst for independent investors that works entirely in iMessage. It keeps the thesis you text it and does the comparison above without being asked:
- It watches the filings. New 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings for your holdings and watched companies, plus earnings releases and news.
- It reads them against your thesis. Text "tell me if a filing changes my NVDA thesis" and it checks each new filing against what you said.
- It messages only when something bears on it. A short text with what changed, why it matters, and the filing and section. Most filings produce no message.
- It keeps the thesis history. If the evidence changes your view, the new version records why.
- It answers follow-ups. Reply "what did that risk factor say last year?" and it compares the two filings, naming both.
Ecomerate is in private beta
An AI research analyst in iMessage that reads new filings against your thesis and texts you when something changes, with the filing named.
Join the waitlistWhat are the limits?
- Wording is not substance. A reworded risk factor may reflect a lawyer's edit rather than a business change.
- Summaries can be wrong. Any AI can confuse periods or drop a qualifier. Read the quoted passage.
- A thesis-aware filter can miss things. A change outside your thesis can still matter. Skim the full filing at least once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions
What tools summarise company filings and highlight thesis changes?
BamSEC compares two filings and marks every addition and removal. Lense, Fiscal.ai, Koyfin's Compare Matrix and AlphaSense produce AI summaries with citations. Ecomerate checks each new 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K for the companies you hold against the thesis you gave it and texts you the change with the filing named.
Is there a free way to summarise SEC filings?
SEC EDGAR full-text search is a public SEC site that searches filings since 2001, though it does not summarise them. Lense's free plan includes three analyses a month, and ChatGPT and Claude can summarise a filing you upload on their free plans.
What is the difference between a filing summary and a thesis change?
A summary condenses what the filing says. A thesis change is the subset of that which affects why you own the stock, such as a guidance cut in the segment your thesis depends on. Only a tool that knows your thesis can make that cut for you.
Which sections of a 10-K change most often in ways that matter?
Risk factors, Management's Discussion and Analysis, segment disclosures, customer concentration and liquidity. In 8-Ks, results (Item 2.02), executive departures (Item 5.02) and material agreements (Item 1.01) are worth reading in full.
Can AI filing summaries be wrong?
Yes. They can confuse periods, drop qualifiers or overstate a wording change. Treat a summary as a pointer to the passage, then read the passage.
