Astor, Walnut, Perplexity and Origin link to your brokerage account, Robinhood and Schwab have AI assistants for their own accounts, and Moneda and Ecomerate work with any broker because you give them your holdings. Linked apps read your holdings through a read-only connection: Astor (free; Pro $19/mo) and Origin ($1 for the first year, then $99/yr) connect through data networks including Plaid, Perplexity links brokerages through Plaid (basic features free; Pro $20/mo), and Walnut reads most major US brokers and places orders you approve at some (free; Unlimited $9.99/mo). Brokers' own assistants work only with that broker: Robinhood's Cortex Assistant (with Gold, $5/mo) and Schwab's Charley, rolling out to eligible clients from October 2026. Other apps take your holdings as you give them: Moneda imports a screenshot, PDF or CSV (free; Premium from €9.99/mo), and Ecomerate works with any broker because you text it your positions in iMessage. Ecomerate's direct brokerage connections are coming soon.
Key Takeaways
- • Linked apps: Astor, Walnut, Perplexity and Origin connect to the brokerage you already use and read your holdings without moving your money.
- • Broker assistants: Robinhood's Cortex Assistant and Schwab's Charley see only that firm's accounts. If your money sits at one broker, that may be all you need.
- • No link needed: Moneda rebuilds positions from a screenshot, PDF or CSV, and Ecomerate takes them by text, so both work with any broker without your login.
- • Trading varies: Walnut places approved orders at supported brokers, Astor trades in a Robinhood agentic account on Max, Cortex pre-fills orders you confirm, and Moneda trades in its own app. Perplexity's link is read-only.
How do AI investing apps get your holdings?
There are three ways, and the apps below each use one or two of them.
- • A linked connection. You approve a read-only link, usually through a data network, and the app reads your positions as they change. Your money stays at your broker.
- • Your broker's own assistant. The AI is built into the broker's app and sees the accounts you hold there, and nothing else.
- • You tell it. You upload a statement or file, or type your positions, and the app works from that. Nothing is linked, so it works with any broker, but you keep it current.
- • Before you link anything, approve access on your broker's own page and never type your brokerage password into an app. Our guide on whether it's safe to connect your brokerage account explains why.

Which brokers have their own AI assistant?
Robinhood. Cortex Assistant is for Robinhood Gold members on iOS. Robinhood's disclosure says it can analyze your holdings and allocations across your Robinhood accounts and pre-fill orders for eligible stocks, with nothing executed until you confirm. It also says the assistant isn't an investment adviser and doesn't give recommendations.
Schwab. Schwab announced Charley on September 30, 2026, rolling out in phases from October to eligible US retail clients on Schwab.com and the Schwab Mobile app. It answers questions about balances, recent transactions and positions, grounded in Schwab's data, and can complete select tasks such as updating watchlists and alerts.
Fidelity. Fidelity's site offers a virtual assistant for quick customer-service answers. We didn't find a Fidelity page describing an AI assistant that analyzes your holdings.
A broker's assistant is the simplest choice if nearly everything you own is at that broker. If you hold accounts at two or three firms, each assistant sees only its own slice.
Should you link your account or type your positions?
| Linked, read-only connection | Positions you give it | |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | Brokers the app's connection supports | Any broker |
| Stays current | Automatically | When you send an update |
| What you share | Ongoing access to your account data, approved at your broker | Only what you choose to type or upload |
| Setup | Approve access at each broker | Type or upload in a minute |
| Examples and price | Astor (free; Pro $19/mo), Walnut (free), Perplexity (Pro $20/mo), Origin ($99/yr) | Moneda (free; Premium from €9.99/mo), Ecomerate (free; from $11.99/mo) |
When is another tool the better choice?
- • You want an AI to place orders you approve in the account you already have: Walnut does at supported brokers such as Public and E*Trade.
- • You want an SEC-registered adviser's personalized recommendations about all your accounts: Astor links them and is offered by a registered adviser.
- • You want budgeting and spending in the same app: Origin, Empower's free dashboard or Perplexity, which also links bank accounts, cards and loans.
- • Nearly everything you own is at Robinhood or Schwab: their own assistants already see it.
- • You're on Android: Ecomerate needs an iPhone, iPad or Mac, so a web tool such as Walnut, or Perplexity on desktop, fits better.
Where does Ecomerate fit?
Ecomerate is an AI research analyst you text in iMessage, and it works with whatever broker you use because you tell it what you own. Text "I own 50 NVDA at $120" and a line on why, and its answers refer to your position. It reads new 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings, insider trades and earnings for your holdings, texts you when something touches your reasons for owning a stock, and names the filing, section and date so you can check it. Ask for a deep thesis and a PDF research note arrives a minute or two later.
The limits: brokerage connections are coming soon and are not live, so you update positions by text. It places no orders: not yet; automated trading is coming soon. It covers US-listed stocks and ETFs, runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and is research software rather than a registered adviser, so it doesn't tell you what to buy or sell.
