An investment thesis is your own written reason for owning a stock. It says what you believe is true, what would prove you wrong, and what you are watching. It is not a broker rating, a price target, or advice from the company.

What belongs in a thesis?
Write the claim, the evidence you are using, and the change that would make you revisit it. A sentence you can check later is more useful than a page of adjectives.
- The claim, in one or two sentences
- The filing or figure it rests on
- What would change your mind
How is a thesis different from a price target?
A price target is a number someone else publishes. A thesis is your reason. The number can move without the reason changing, and the reason can break while the price is still rising.
- A target is a number
- A thesis is a reason you can test
- They are not the same decision
How do you check a thesis after you buy?
When a new 10-Q, 10-K or 8-K arrives, ask whether it touches the claim you wrote down. If you never wrote the claim, you cannot tell a material change from noise.
- Keep the original wording
- Compare it with the new filing
- Note the date you reviewed it

Frequently asked questions
What is an investment thesis?
It is your written reason for owning a stock: the claim, the evidence, and what would change your mind. It is not a rating or a price target.
Do I need a thesis for every holding?
It helps for any stock you own for a reason. Without it, a new filing is just more paper.
Does Ecomerate write the thesis for me?
You can ask it for a research note, including a bull and bear case. The reason you own the stock is still yours. Thesis alerts check new evidence against the reason you text it.
Is a thesis financial advice?
No. A thesis is your own note. Ecomerate is research, not financial advice, and it does not tell you what to buy, sell or hold.
