ChatGPT answers money questions and, in the US, can link your accounts through its Finances feature. Ecomerate reads filings for the US stocks you own against your thesis and texts you when something changes. What each does, what each costs, and when to use both.

How does ChatGPT handle stock research?
Ecomerate wrote this comparison, so read it knowing we have a stake. Every ChatGPT fact below comes from OpenAI's own pricing page, help center and plugin page, checked on October 29, 2026.
ChatGPT is a general assistant. Search is on every plan, deep research is limited on Free and Go and fuller on Plus and Pro, and you can upload files. For a stock, that means you can paste in a 10-K and ask about it, or ask ChatGPT to look up a company's latest results and explain them. It is good at explaining concepts and structuring a question. The answer depends on what it finds or what you give it, and each question starts with you.
With Memory on, ChatGPT can draw on details from past chats and saved memories, and you can review or delete what it keeps. That helps it remember, say, that you prefer dividend stocks. It is general memory, not a record of why you own each holding that is checked against each new filing.
What does ChatGPT Finances do with your portfolio?
OpenAI's release notes date the rollout. Finances began rolling out to Pro users in the US on May 15, 2026, on web and iOS. It expanded to Plus users and Android on June 26, credit scores through Experian were added for Plus and Pro on September 21, and it began rolling out to Free and Go users in the US on October 2, 2026.
You connect accounts through Plaid. The Finances page can show spending by category, bills, subscriptions, net worth, a portfolio breakdown across equities, bonds, ETFs, cash and crypto, and a market update with the daily change and size of each equity holding. You can ask how your portfolio is allocated, and ChatGPT keeps financial memories, such as a savings goal, that you can view or delete. OpenAI says ChatGPT can't move money, make trades or change account settings, and that synced data is deleted within 30 days when you disconnect.
Can ChatGPT watch your stocks and alert you?
Yes, if you set it up. Scheduled tasks run once or on a repeating schedule, and monitoring tasks check for a change and notify you by push or email. OpenAI gives the example of a portfolio update after the market closes, and connecting Finances may add a weekly finances update on its own. Active task limits are 3 on Go, 5 on Plus and 15 on Pro, and hourly schedules need an eligible paid plan.
The catch is that you decide in advance what each task looks for and when it runs. OpenAI also says Finances data can't be used for event-triggered tasks, so a portfolio task runs on its schedule rather than when a company files something.
How does Ecomerate research and watch your stocks?
Ecomerate starts with what you own and why. Text it a position, such as 50 NVDA at $120, and a line on your reasons. It keeps that thesis and checks new evidence against it. When something in a new 10-Q or 8-K touches an assumption you gave it, it texts you at a sensible time, quoting the detail and naming the filing. It also texts when guidance changes, when a holding moves well outside its normal range and a cause is found, and when a price crosses a line you set.
You can reply to any text with a follow-up. Ask what changed against last quarter, how estimates were revised, or for a DCF with your own assumptions. Ask for a deep thesis on a stock and a PDF research note arrives a minute or two later, covering your position, the bull and bear case, recent earnings against estimates, and what would change the view. By default it sends about three proactive texts a week and respects quiet hours, so the texts stay worth reading.
When is ChatGPT the better choice?
If you want help with all of your money, ChatGPT covers far more. Spending, subscriptions, budgets, debt payoff and your credit score are all in Finances, and Ecomerate covers none of them. ChatGPT is also strong for learning: what a Roth IRA is, how bond prices react to rates, or how to read a cash flow statement.
It is the better fit if you use Android or want a web app, if you already pay for ChatGPT and only want a weekly portfolio summary, or if you trade at Interactive Brokers and want draft orders you approve yourself. Ecomerate needs an Apple device and works only in iMessage.
Where does Ecomerate fit?
Ecomerate is narrower and deeper. It covers US-listed stocks and ETFs, not crypto, international markets or the rest of your finances. It uses the positions you text it, since brokerage connections aren't live yet. It places no orders today; automated trading is coming soon. It is research software, not an adviser, and it never tells you to buy, sell or hold.
Many investors will use both. ChatGPT can hold the whole picture of your money, and Ecomerate can watch the individual companies inside it, telling you when a filing or an earnings report changes the reason you own one.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Ecomerate if...
You own individual US stocks for specific reasons and want an analyst in iMessage that remembers those reasons, reads each new filing and earnings report against them, names its sources, and texts you first when something changes.
Choose ChatGPT if...
You want one assistant for learning, writing and everyday money questions, a dashboard of spending, net worth and credit linked through Plaid, or an app on Android and the web, and you are happy to set up your own scheduled checks.
Before You Rely on Either

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use Ecomerate or ChatGPT for stock research?
Use ChatGPT for general questions, learning and a view of your whole finances through its US Finances feature. Use Ecomerate when you want the US stocks you own read against your thesis, with the filing and section named, and a text when something changes. Many investors use both.
Can ChatGPT see my brokerage account?
In the US, yes. Finances links accounts through Plaid on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans and can show your allocation and the daily changes in your stock and ETF holdings. OpenAI says it can't make trades or move money. Ecomerate works from the positions you text it; brokerage connections aren't live yet.
Can ChatGPT send me alerts about my stocks?
It can run scheduled and monitoring tasks that you create, with notifications by push or email. Go allows 3 active tasks, Plus 5 and Pro 15, and hourly schedules need a paid plan. Ecomerate texts you without a task when a filing, guidance change or large move touches a stock you hold.
Is ChatGPT a financial adviser?
No. OpenAI's Finances help article says ChatGPT isn't a fiduciary, registered investment adviser or broker-dealer, and that its answers are for information and planning. Ecomerate isn't an adviser either: it is research software that never tells you to buy, sell or hold.
How much do ChatGPT and Ecomerate cost?
ChatGPT has a free plan, with Go at $8, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100 a month. Ecomerate is free for 10 messages a week; Starter is $11.99, Professional $24.99 and Ultimate $59.99 a month, each with a 7-day free trial.
