What can an AI stock research assistant do well?

• Find the passage. Locate the section of a 10-K or a call transcript that answers your question, instead of reading 150 pages.
• Compare periods. Set this quarter's margins, guidance or risk factors against last quarter's or last year's.
• Argue the other side. List the evidence against your thesis, which people rarely go looking for themselves.
• Keep watch. The better assistants monitor filings, earnings and news for your holdings and tell you when something changes.
• Organise a checklist. Turn a vague idea into the specific questions you need to answer before buying.

What can it not do?

• Predict returns. A model can describe scenarios. It cannot tell you what a share price will do.
• Guarantee accuracy. Models confuse quarters, units and companies, and drop qualifiers that change the meaning.
• Know your circumstances. Suitability, tax and how much risk you can carry are decisions it cannot make for you.
• See what is not disclosed. It works from published information, and only as current as its latest source.

How do you check an AI assistant's answer?

A polished answer is not proof of a correct one. For any figure you would act on:

1. Open the source it names. No source means unverified.
2. Find the exact passage or table.
3. Check the period, the units and whether the figure is GAAP or adjusted.
4. Check the date, and whether a newer filing has replaced it.
5. Separate what the filing says from how the assistant interpreted it.

How should you choose one?

Ignore feature lists for a moment and run a short test. Pick two companies you know well and ask every assistant the same five questions:

1. What changed in the latest 10-Q compared with the one before?
2. What did management say about guidance on the last call?
3. What is the strongest case against owning this stock?
4. What was revenue in the segment I care about, last four quarters?
5. Which of your answers could you not verify?

Score each on whether the figures match the filings, whether sources are named, and whether it admits gaps. The last question is the most revealing. Then decide whether you want to visit a tool or have it come to you.
